"All love that has not friendship for its base, is like a mansion built upon the sand." -- Ella Wheeler Wilcox
A provoking thought, indeed, for (to paraphrase another's words) love alone has but one option: to melt into obsession. Friendship, however, is anchored in sharing and that is all it can be! So, if you build love on the foundation of friendship you have the makings for a life-long sharing of two lives. How beautiful! We also know from the Scriptures that the wise man (or woman) builds his house (his life!) upon the rock --- and we know that that Rock is Christ.
It seems prudent, then, to construct your love on a foundation of friendship and strive to ensure that the entire edifice rests solely on the Rock which our Lord. No guarantees the floods won't come; but a house built on such solid ground surely has the "Upper Hand" in riding out the storms.
